MAURICE COCKRILL, RA

Born 1936

(Elected Keeper of the Royal Academy Collections)

Cockrill possess a rigorous approach to art.  Restless, lyrical and challenging, his work is constantly evolving, defying conventional categorisation, and has ranged from photorealism to expressionism, and from sexually charged landscapes to mythological subjects and near abstraction.

From the 1980s Cockrill works are more mature and accomplished: 'Generation', 'Wheat', 'Song of the Earth', 'Place of Fire' and 'Four Elements', among other series.

Born in Hartlepool, County Durham, he studied at Wrexham School of Art, South Wales, then Denbigh Technical College and later the University of Reading from 1960-64.  Cockrill employed Pop and Photo-Realist styles, and later moved towards Romantic Expressionism, as shown in his retrospective at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool in 1995.

Cockrill’s work is in many public and private collections as well at the Tate Gallery.  He is one of the most original artists working in Britain today.  His works are very affordable in the current market but it is likely that this will not be the case for too long.
