FRED YATES

Born 1922

Fred’s work is characterised by heavy impasto oil paint, applied luxuriously. His works are usually vibrantly coloured or can come in strong monochromatic tones.

Fred Yates was brought up in Urmston, Manchester. A self taught artist, Fred started to paint industrial Manchester, including the hustle and bustle of street life, its terraces, ambience and social interaction much in the same way as Lowry depicted Manchester street scenes. He commenced a teacher training course at Bournemouth College of Art and in 1950 won a travelling scholarship to Rome and Florence. He taught for twenty years. Around this time, he also came second to Lowry in the Football Association’s painting competition- Lowry’s famous work ‘Going To The Match’ attaining first place.

In 1969 Fred gave up teaching and moved to Cornwall to paint full-time and is known for his vibrant Cornish scenes. In 1998 Fred moved to France. In 2002, he moved to Provence, where he still lives and paints influenced by his surroundings.

His paintings are included in many private and public collections.  His works are fun and very affordable in the current climate.  However, prices are rising.
